Question:
Hi I have a 2021 Grand Design 278BH 5th wheel 34. I am looking at what parts I would need to upgrade the brakes from electronic drum to disk. I know the axles are dual Dexter 5,100lbs units. Are you able to point me in the direction of which parts I would need to complete this upgrade? Thanks!

To switch over to electric over hydraulic disc brakes you'll need start by finding the bearing and grease seal combination for your trailer's axles so that we can find a compatible hub/rotor assembly. If you remove the hub and measure the spindle with a set of calipers # PTW80157 at points B, C, and D from the diagram below we can use these inner diameter measurements to determine a fit.
From there we'll need to determine the correct length brake line kit to make the run from the front of the trailer where the actuator will be mounted to the brake assemblies. With the length of your trailer you'll most likely need a kit in the 20' range like part # HS496-252.
Next you'll need the electric over hydraulic actuator, like the # HS381-8067, and a breakaway battery (you should already have a breakaway battery for your electric drum brakes that you can wire this actuator to.
To last thing to do will be to check whether your brake controller is compatible with Electric over hydraulic actuators and replace if not. If you have a factory brake controller in your tow vehicle you'll want to switch to an aftermarket option like the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller # RED24FR. Factory brake controllers typically aren't EOH compatible and the ones that are typically have communication issues and a delayed response.
I've attached one of our help articles and a couple of videos to give you a better idea of the process.
