2021 Ram - What Size Fifth Wheel Can I Pull And How To Determine Capacity
Published 09/29/2023 >
Question:
Question is with regard to a 2021 Ram Diesel with auto level option. Total cargo weight on the door sticker reads a puny 1985lbs, GVWR reads 10000lbs, but axles are rated for 6000lbs front and 6400lbs rear. Im estimating a sliding hitch for the short bed at 350lbs, The fifth wheel trailer Id like to buy has a hitch weight of 2350lbs. Currently, Im pulling a fifth wheel with a hitch weight of 2000lbs with no problems. I looked at switching to a goose neck to save weight, but short bed wont give me the clearance to the cab that I need. Do I even have a functional problem? if so, is there any hope of a solution short of replacing the truck? I need an opinion/advice from someone with more experience than me.

Those are good questions. We would first want to confirm the specific model of Ram truck you have. The towing/pin weight capacities can vary between different model. Your owners manual should also specify the towing capacity and pin weight capacity. Cargo weight and pin weight are generally listed separately. Once we determine that, we can say with certainty if you will be able to pull a larger camper or not. Honestly, sometimes it is the case that the truck just is not cut out for that kid of towing.
We never recommend going over any of the specified weight ratings for your truck. If you are currently pulling a 5th wheel with 2K pin weight it may be that you are right at or just over capacity. Anytime you are over capacity there is going to be risk involved. I would certainly not want to put my brand new fifth wheel at risk. We want to know for sure that your truck has adequate capacity if you are thinking of going with a larger camper. There are ways to help beef up the suspension of your truck if needed, but there is not a way to increase your towing capacity.
