Troubleshooting Prodigy P3 Brake Controller Random Error Codes
Published 07/26/2023 >
Question:
I have the p3 installed in my QX80. It works most of the time, however, it will occasionally flash the red error message that says electrical overload or one of the other error messages relating to connection. It seems very random, and when I take my foot off of the break and reapply it, it seems to reset and then works OK until next time when I start to apply the brakes this happens approximately 30 of the time. Any ideas on what this could be? Thank you

It sounds like either your Prodigy P3 # 90195 wiring needs to be looked at, or the wiring for the trailer brake circuit.
Start off by checking that the wiring for the P3 is operating as it should. The pigtail connected to the back of the controller will have the following wires connected to the following functions:
Blue - 7-Way Output to Trailer
Black - 12V Power
White - Ground
Red - COLD Side of Stop Light Switch (only gets hot when brake pedal is pressed)
If all of that checks out then you want to check the wiring for the brakes to make sure it has a consistent connection and power from your brake controller back to the vehicle 7-Way and then to your trailer brakes. Be sure to replace any damaged wiring as well as fix any broken connections and your brake controller issues should be resolved!
