Looking for class 3 hitch for 2017 BMW X5. Does the ECU need to be programmed so the detection system does not alarm while trailering?

The best class III hitch for your 2017 BMW X5 is going to be the etrailer Hitch item # e84AR. This hitch is custom fit and bolts to your BMW with included hardware. It fits all models of the 2017 X5 including the M Performance and Sport Package.
There should be a button that turns off the detection system so you don't have that annoying alarm going off. I recommend checking your manual for towing procedures. Most newer vehicles go into quite a bit of detail on what all you need to do plus weight capacity is broken down for the specific models.
I really like the etrailer Hitch item # e84AR because of the hidden crosstube design. The crosstube mounts behind your rear bumper cover leaving only the 2" receiver visible. This not only looks better but it helps with ground clearance. I have linked an installation video below.
Since you are planning on towing you will also need a wiring harness item # C56190KIT and a ball mount kit item # C45534.
