Replacement Trailer Hitch Options for a 2008 Coachmen Cross Country 38' Motorhome
Published 04/06/2023 >
Question:
I have a 2008 Coachmen Cross Country 38 foot coach on a Freightliner chassis and the original hitch rated for 5000# GTW failed. I am looking at this hitch ,but it would have to be attached horizontal instead of vertical on the frame. Is this an acceptable change, and if so would it affect the GTW of the hitch? The first photo is of the original hitch and the others are the rear passenger side of the frame showing the attachment points. If this hitch can be attached in a horizontal mode, I would go to a longer hitch.

The mounting brackets on the Curt Class 5 Universal Weld-on Hitch # C47CR do need to be in that upright position so while this hitch can technically fit with your motorhome chassis, you'll need to get creative on how to properly weld the brackets to the frame.
For an alternative option with the brackets that are in the same orientation as your frame brackets I recommend the Multi-Fit Motorhome Trailer Hitch # 5350 which fits 24" - 46" wide frames and is rated for 5,000 lbs towing.
If you want the higher weight rating go with the Curt, but if you want the matching frame setup go with the Draw-Tite.
