Question:

What prevents someone from unconnecting this from the draw bar and just walking off with it and the bikes?

As-is, there is minimal theft deterrent with the Curt Clamp-On 3 Bike Rack # C18013; Other than inconvenience. The rack can be a little cumbersome to break down as there are a couple steps needed and those steps are made more difficult with bikes loaded because you have to use the handle and knob on the crossbar to get the rack to start collapsing again to remove it from the draw bar. With your bikes loaded that will be difficult, but not impossible. Especially if they remove the bikes first.

However, in the crossbar (see attached picture) there is a pin hole that you can put a coupler lock like the etrailer Adjustable Trailer Coupler Latch Lock # e98883 through that will prevent the rack from being able to collapse. Therefore preventing the rack from being removed.

You can also add a cable lock like the # e98891 to secure your bikes to the rack, adding another layer of deterrent.

I have also included a video that goes over this bike rack. From the features to set-up and collapsing.
