Question:
I am purchasing a 31foot travel trailer 7,200 lbs. Currently I have a the stock hitch from Chevy on my 13 Avalanche, which shows 8,000 lb and 15,000 rating. My question is do I need a heavier duty hitch? I was told that the hitch mounting flanges should extend further forward on the vehicle, having a greater span between the bolts that what the stock hitch has.

Expert Reply:
The hitch on your 2013 Chevy Avalanche was given its rating based on its design and where it mounts on the truck. Since your trailer weighs 7,200 pounds you are still below the 8,000 pound weight carrying capacity and well below the 15,000 pound capacity with weight distribution. A more heavy duty hitch is not required for this trailer.
Please also consult the truck owners manual for the towing capacities of your specific model. Which ever has the lower capacity, the hitch or the truck, is the rating you need to go by.
