Can Trailer Hitch Take More Weight Than Rated For When Using Yakima EXO System

Question:
Hi there, I have a Volvo v70. In my owners manual is says the vehicle is rated to a maximum of 165 lbs on the trailer hitch. I am looking to buy a hitch cargo carrier like the Yakima Exo which will weigh about 90 lbs. That will leave about 75-lbs to play with in terms of storing stuff in the carrier. Because Im using the car for car camping, when I arrive at my destination and the car is parked, I would like to load some additional things in the hitch cargo carrier just to have them out of the way. Lets say I loaded the carrier with an additional 20 lbs of stuff...so now its at 90+95= 185....and 20 lbs over my 165 tongue weight limit. As long as Im not driving anywhere do you think this should be okay will I damage the vehicle or trailer hitch? Thank you

You should always abide by the limits set in the owner's manual, as they have the final say and have tested the capabilities of the vehicle. So the hitch on your Volvo should not take any more weight than the 165 lb tongue weight capacity when using the Yakima EXO Swing Away Enclosed Cargo Carrier # Y62VR.
Even when you're parked and not traveling, excessive weight will put undue stress on the hitch and frame, so be sure to stay at that 165 lbs.
