Question:

Hello, I recently picked up a trailer and Id like to replace the brake/hub/bearing assembly. However, Im having some trouble identifying the axles, I have no VIN, make, model, stamps, or any identifying labels. The axles are square tube 2.5inch in the middle 4-6 then 2inch on the outer foot or two on each side. The hubs on both axles are drum brakes, 6x5-1/2inch lug pattern. The spindles are tapered- 0.944inch outer bearing ID, then flaring from 1.032-appx 1.36, then 1.50inch inner bearing ID, then 1.977inch seal. The spindle is 1inch long at the outer bearing, flare is 1.125inch long, inner bearing 1inch long, and the seal 0.433inch long. The threads seem to be appx 7/8inch diameter, 1inch long. From the inside of the brake assembly to the inside of the other is 85.5, hub face 93.5, 81.25inch spring center. Each leaf spring pack has 5 leafs leaves?. Additionally, there are currently two similar but different tire sizes on the trailer right now 225/75r15 and 2015/75r15. Does it matter which size I get when I replace these tires? Id like to replace them all with the larger size since that would give me a hair more ground clearance if theres no reason not to. Lastly, when how can I determine what pressure I should keep the tires at? I see maximums on the sidewall but not sure what the recommended pressure for daily use is. Thank you in advance. Based on the axle and bearing measurements it looks like your trailer was using a Dexter 22834 hub. The Outer Bearing # 1779 has an ID of .938" and the Inner Bearing # 2788 has an ID of 1.50". The outer bearing is slightly off but that may be due to a measuring error. That would also mean you have 5,200 lb axles on the trailer. This is an obsolete assembly so you will need to replace the entire axle.

For a replacement you can use the # e55SR. This will stick out an extra 3/4" on either side but that shouldn't be a problem. It uses the same 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern and comes with hubs and electric brakes. You will also need the # APUBR-8 for installation since this is a round trailer axle.

As far as the tires are concerned, you can use the larger size as long as there is enough clearance. You should have a minum of 2" of clearance on the inside and 3" on top of the tire for regular suspension travel. For replacement tires, the Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10303 would be a good option. They have a max load of 2,830 lbs, max speed of 81 mph, and come with a 5-year warranty. You should keep the tire pressure of these and your current tires at the max psi.

I am in NEED of 1 or 2 Dexter 22834 6 by 5 1/2 idler hubs, that carry 2788 and 1789 bearings for a little trailer I bought for my son. I am 65 years old and I remember replacing many of the bearings on these hubs that were on all our stock trailers at the ranch when I was a kid. Unfortunately they are obsolete now, you can still get the bearings and races, but not the hubs. I know there are probably plenty of them still out there, they could either have the hexagon screw on grease cap, or tap in. I would DEFINITELY APPRECIATE ANY RESPONSES. @Randy I don't think you're going to find them online at all. You can keep an eye on something like eBay but that is a long shot. I just looked and they don't have anything listed at this time. Your best bet is to find an RV salvage yard and see if they have any.
