Why isn't 12 Volt 7-Way Trailer Wiring Circuit of 2022 Ram 3500 Rated Higher

Published 01/11/2023

Question:

I have a 2022 RAM 3500 with dual 220 amp alternators. The truck knows when the RV is connected but Im not getting much current to the RV batteries. What is limiting the current flow on the +12v circuit in the RV plug? Thanks.

It's most likely the wire gauge of the 12 volt accessory circuit of the 7-way on your 2022 Ram 3500. In general this circuit doesn't carry a lot of voltage on most trucks though. Typically to put more of a substantial charge on the trailer battery a BCDC charger like the Redarc part # RED96FR would work great.

Or you could go with 10 gauge wire on the circuit you have now like with the part # 10-1-1.

In general the high output alternators you have aren't for trailer accessories and instead are for the higher amperage requirement of the starter for a diesel engine.
