In regards to using a hitch extender like the etrailer Hitch Extender for 2" Trailer Hitches part # e28YR, you'll need to reduce the weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50%. For example, if you're using a trailer hitch with a 350 lb tongue weight rating your new rating with the adapter will be 175 lbs which includes the weight of the cargo and carrier.
If you need to maintain your hitches weight capacity you can switch to a swing-away carrier like the Yakima EXO Swing Away Enclosed Cargo Carrier part # Y62VR which will allow the hatch to open with the carrier installed.
