What is the Function of Diode on Fan-Tastic Vent Speed Control

Question:
I have a older RV with a Fantastic fan. The fan wasnt working. I went through the components and found that if I jumped the remote speed control diode. the speed control and fan worked as it should. What is the function of this diode?

Diodes are designed to keep electricity from back-feeding into the power source and causing shorts in the circuit. If the Replacement 3-Speed Switch for Fan-Tastic Vent Roof Vent # FVK1031-05 is what you're needing then I do recommend replacing the switch so you have the diode for protection.
