The 2006 Ford Ranger will not have a port or plug to plug in a brake controller. It will have to be hardwired to the vehicle.
First, if your truck does not have any type of trailer wiring harness you will first need to install a 4-Way, # 18252. Then you will need to add a 7-Way and the other components to install the brake controller using # ETBC7. If the truck does already have a 4-Way then you will not need # 18252.
I have included some links that explain the ETBC7 installation for you.
For a brake controller I recommend the Tekonsha P2, # 90885. This is one of our most popular controllers because it is easy to set up, easy to use, and its reliable. I have also linked an FAQ article on brake controllers for you.
