What is the Correct 1-1/4 to 2" Hitch Adapter for a Yakima Bike Rack On a 2012 Hyundai Tucson?

Updated 06/27/2022 | Published 06/25/2022

Question:

I have a Yakima 4-bike rack that weighs 28 lbs and will only use it for 1-2 bikes that weigh 25 lbs each. Bike rack hole is 3inch from the end to the middle of the hole. The trailer hitch that I have is 6 1/2inch from the middle of one hole to the other and the length of the trailer hitch is 9 1/4. I was going to order the receiver/adapter you have that is 6 1/2inch long hole to hole and I believe 11inch total length. Is that the correct adapter to order? What will be the tongue weight on it? The most weight I would put on it is 78 lbs rack weight plus 2 bikes.

Expert Reply:

The Hitch Adapter 1-1/4" to 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver # HTAD is 11" in overall length. The hitch pin holes on this are separated by 7-1/4" from center to center. Using the hitch pin measurements is the best way to see where the bike rack will sit on your vehicle. The adapter itself reduces the receiver capacity on your 2012 Hyundai Tucson by 50%. With a receiver like the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 36510 it has a rating of 300lbs, so with the adapter maximum hitch weight would be 150lbs. Be sure to verify the weight rating on your receiver and use that to determine your hitch weight.
