Troubleshooting Kwikee Steps Not Responding to the Override Switch

Question:

My steps do not respond to override switch. They open and close everytime I use the doors. I changed the override switch and that did not fix problem. Should i change control module and if so what model number would work mine is 15100000140 rev ga. Im a 77 year old female single traveler that is pretty handy. Would this be a job that i could do myself. Thanks for your help

The correct replacement control for your 1510000140 step control is the Replacement Control Unit for Kwikee # LC363985.

Since most of your functions seem to be working correctly, I would start by checking the 4-way connector before replacing the control unit, it is likely you have a malfunction with the door switch, power switch or wiring. It sounds like your motor is working fine, if your 4-way connector checks out then it could very well be a control issue.

It sounds like you are pretty handy, if you were able to change out your override switch then I think there is a good chance you can handle the control until as well.

I have included some diagrams for testing the 4-way connector and an installation video for the replacement step control.

Steps wont go in and out One 9f you peopl suggested hot power to..... to tedt door switch Hot power to power in front of controller? Or from controller to motor

@Bruce RV steps not coming in and out and can mean a variety of things. The first thing to check is if your steps are caked up with dirt or debris, being under the vehicle it's very easy to have stuff fling up and stick to the gears. From there I would check the teeth of the gear and inspect the motor and its linkage. Next you can disconnect the 4-pole wire harness connected to the steps and use a multimeter # PT89ZR to test each function like in the diagram above. You'd place the negative test probe on an unpainted portion of the frame or a ground screw in the frame and the positive probe into the motorhome side connector at each port to test each function. -The red wire is your 12v power coming from the battery. If this isn't reading 12 volts then you need to check the fuse and find out where you lost power at. -The yellow is the override switch that closes the steps so that they can't be deployed while the vehicle is in motion and should read 12v when tested. -The white is the same as the yellow but just another override switch, you'll test it the same way. -The door switch will have you place the negative probe to the red wire port and positive probe to the brown wire. This should also read 12v. Likely your door switch has gone bad and since it's not working the steps don't recognize that the door is open and extend. These are specific so I'll need to know what model steps you have in order to find the correct replacement. If you look at the bottom of the mounting plate or on the sides of the steps they usually hide the manufacturer sticker there. Let me know how your testing goes and we can keep troubleshooting.

@KevinC i changed the controller light now comes on but no step movement I took the 2 wires from the door switch connedted them no movement Disconnected the steps tyey move fine

@BruceC When you say you disconnected the steps what exactly did you do? What is your step model number?
