Question:

Good morning. I am going to be towing a mini-camper/sleeper, this coming summer and fall. I just found out that I am going to need a 7-pin connector, because the new trailer will have electric brakes. My issue is that I think the mechanic cut some wires in the 4-pin wiring harness. So, I would like to know what part number I will need to install, so I can pull my new trailer. My tow vehicle is a 2012 Honda Civic LX 4-door sedan.

I would be happy to help you set up your 2012 Honda Civic LX 4-door sedan to tow your mini-camper. You're going to need two wiring harnesses to get a 7-way connector on your Civic plus a brake controller. They do not make 7-way's specifically for your car which is why you will need two separate harnesses.

In case your 4-way is damaged and you want to replace it you will need the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector item # 118420. I have linked an installation video below.

The second harness you will need is the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires item # ETBC7. The kit includes a pre-wired 7- and 4-way trailer connector that mounts easily at the rear of your vehicle with an included bracket. This kit is designed for use on a vehicle with an existing 4-way flat trailer connector and plugs directly into it.

The best brake controller for your Honda Civic is going to be the Curt Echo item # C51180. This bluetooth-enabled brake controller wirelessly connects to your smartphone. This controller plugs directly into the 7-way and does not require you to install a brake controller inside your car. This will save you time finding wires or hiring someone to do it and it will eliminate the hassle of having a bulky brake controller installed on your dash.

You will want to confirm your cars towing capacity. You can find this information in your owners manual or by calling your local Honda dealership and giving them your VIN.

If you don't already have a hitch or it doesn't have a 2" receiver you will need the EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - 2" item # 306-X7235.

To round out your towing setup I recommend the Curt Towing Starter Kit for 2" Hitches item # C45534. This towing kit will provide you with a 2" ball and a fixed ball mount with a 3/4" rise and 2" drop.
