Question:
Can the bag be attached by the side rails only? Renting a vehicle and there are no cross bars. Thanks

The Rhino-Rack Rooftop Cargo Bag # RRLB250 uses straps to secure the bag either to raised rails or a cargo basket. If the vehicle you're renting has raised rails then this is a great option for you!
If your vehicle doesn't have rails then you need the Rightline Gear Sport Jr. Rooftop Cargo Bag # RL100S50 instead because it comes with hooks that fit inside your door jambs. If you aren't sure what your vehicle will come with then the Gear Sport Jr. is definitely the way to go since you don't have to install the hooks. This means this bag can work with a bare roof or with roof rails.
No matter which roof bag you decide to go with I do recommend using the Non-Skid Roof Protection Pad # RL100650 as well. This helps to protect the roof of your vehicle in case there is any kind of debris on the bottom of the bag that may scratch the roof.
