Question:
My car has a 4 pin factory trailer wiring connector. I expect to hook up a 7 pin rv trailer. I would like to keep the 4 pin and have a 7 pin connector. Can you tell me what parts I need and how and where to hook the wires? Thanks!

To convert your existing 4-pole to a 7-way trailer connector, I would recommend using an adapter, like part # 37185. The adapter would plug into your existing 4-pole, and once the white wire is grounded, and the trailer is plugged in, your trailer lighting functions will be active. The blue, black and purple wires carry the brake output, 12-volt accessory power and reverse light circuit, respectively. If either of the three circuits is not needed, one or all three wires can be bundled up out of the way.
If the RV you will be towing has electric brakes and needs a 12-volt accessory circuit, you will need to install a brake controller. I would recommend our Brake Controller Install Kit, part # ETBC7. The kit includes the # 37185 adapter mentioned above, plus the needed wire, circuit breakers, wire ties and other necessary hardware.
For a brake controller, you cannot go wrong with the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. The P2 is a top seller that is very highly rated by our customers, because of how easy it is to use and how well the controller functions.
I have linked you to an FAQ article and an install video that will walk you through the install process. The video shows the kit being used on a Ford Explorer, but the procedure for your Escape would be identical.
