Towing Set Up For 2017 Tacoma And 2017 A-Liner Scout Camper

Updated 02/15/2022 | Published 02/11/2022

Question:

Hello, I believe I am about to buy a 2017 A-liner Scout-Lite camper. I drive a 2017 Tacoma with the towing package. I currently do not have a custom lift on the truck so it is at factory height still. I am trying to find out what equipment I need to tow the camper. This would be my first camper and first time towing anything so its all new to me. Thanks!

You won't have any problems with weight capacity. An Aline has a dry weight of 1180 pounds and a 2017 Tacoma base model can handle 3500 pounds.

I suggest getting RoadActive Suspension Custom Leaf Spring Enhancement Kit # RAS4524-SAT. These will improve stability, handling and help with trailer sway.

If you need the hitch receiver I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # C13264.

You will also need a 7 way connection if you do not already have one. I recommend, if you already have a 4 way, the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires # ETBC7.

If you do not have a 4 way you can go with the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C56349 then you can use the # ETBC7 to get the 7 way.

For a brake controller I recommend the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 2 Axles - Proportional # C51180. It is a simple plug and play set up you can control via mobile device.

Also if you do not want to use your phone to control it you can get the Manual Override Button for Curt Echo Brake Controller # C83HR. This mounts where ever you want and can be used to manually override the trailer brakes.
