Troubleshooting Trailer Running Lamp Circuit on 2020 Chevy 1500

Updated 07/02/2025 | Published 12/14/2021

Question:

My trailer blinkers both work, my trailer break lights both work, but my trailer running lights do not work. The owners manuel does not list trailer running lights, which fuse would I need to change to fix this. Thanks!

GM refers to that circuit as the 'Trailer parking lamp'. The fuse is in location # 41 in the fuse box in the engine compartment.

After replacing the fuse, you'll want to closely examine the running lamp circuit on your trailer. You'll want to locate and repair the short that caused the fuse to blow, before plugging the trailer in for the first time. Otherwise, you'll continue to blow fuses. I'll link to a troubleshooting article that you might find helpful.

@Joe Is the 7-way completely dead? No lighting signals at all? Or is it just the 12V feed circuit? The 2020 Silverado 2500 has a 'smart' trailer connector that won't send 12V to the trailer connector unless a trailer is connected. To activate the 12V feed with a trailer connected, you'll use the display screen on the dash. Your owner's manual will have more info on how to do that.

I'm having trying to locate the fuse for the 12V power to the trailer also on my 2020 1500 Silverado, typically used for backup lights or interior lights on the trailer. I made a 2 wire connector for my 7pt plug and use it on 3 electric trailer Jack's so I don't need to mount a battery on each trailer. Worked great on two trailers. Not so good on the 3rd. When the trailer coupler hit the ball out sparked blowing a fuse. I just can't find which fuse. I do know I have to redo the lead on the electric jack on that trailer.obviously I reversed the two wires on that jack or I would have seen it sparked. Chevy does not make the fuse number easy to find. I do not believe i have the dash screen infotainment display for running the trailer light test on my truck. I assume it's under the hood. Fuse number please?

@RickZ You're looking for the fuse in location 63 which is located in the engine compartment fuse box.
