hello, i am looking for an over the cab ladder rack for my 2014 GMC 1500 sierra. i have a truxedo cover on it, so it needs to be a top mount?

You are correct; you will need to install a ladder rack that installs on top of the truck bed rails, not inside the truck bed rails as this would not work with tonneau covers. Just make sure that you have a tonneau cover that is mounted inside the bed rails so that the ladder rack can install properly.

An over the cab rack that I recommend for your 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 is the Thule TracRac TracONE Ladder Rack w/ Cantilever # TH27000XT-EX. This would be compatible with a roll-up or retractable tonneau cover that installs inside the bed rails, but if you have a folding cover then the slanted uprights of this ladder rack could cause interference.

If you do have a folding cover then you may be able to slide the TracRac forward or backward to gain clearance, although you still would have the best luck installing something like the Adarac Pro Series Custom Truck Bed Ladder Rack which provides straight upright bars that do not interfere with folding covers. Use # A4000963 for 5-1/2' bed, # A24FR for 6-1/2' bed, and # A96FR for 8' bed.
