I measured the rails in my Dodge Ram 2005 3500 8 ft bed at inside 38 3/4inches and 42 inches where the slides would slide in. Are these hitches adjustable?

It sounds to me like you have one of the older Demco rails which have been discontinued. You'll have to replace the rails to be able to have a hitch fit on them. I recommend the B&W Patriot 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # BWRVK3200 with the B&W Custom Installation Kit w/ Base Rails for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # BWRVK2600.
