Should I Switch To Heavier Rated Leaf Springs For My Rock Climbing Trailer?

Updated 07/28/2021 | Published 07/26/2021

Question:

Hello, I currently have springs e22YR on order delayed. They are for a 16 year old rock climbing trailer that the current springs are reverse bowing due to having constant weight. The tandem 3,500 lb axles weigh in at 6,400 lbs. The current springs measure 25 1/8 to 25 1/4. I was thinking of upgrading to hold up better which is why I ordered these. Your recomendation, should I stay with a 3,500 lb, 25 1/4inch spring or stay with I ordered a 4,000 lb, 26inch spring or go with a 6,000 lb, 25 1/4inch spring? How critical is it to stay with the original size? Thanks

I recommend staying with the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 3,500-lb # e54SR. This will ensure that you do not have to change other parts of your suspension system and the trailer has the correct ride quality.

The 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,000-lb # e22YR may have issues with contacting parts of the frame since the springs are 3/4-7/8" longer. To correct this your spring hangers would need to be moved.

The 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 6,000-lb # e47SR would cause you to have a very stiff ride. The springs are rated for nearly double your trailer load and would cause a lot more bouncing than absorbing.

A set of SumoSprings Trailer Helper Springs # TSS-107-40 will help the springs to absorb the shock and extend the life of the springs. They fit between the axle and the frame on an overslung axle that sits below the leaf springs. If you have an underslung axle the SumoSprings # TSS-106-40 would be the correct kit for your trailer.
