Question:

My trailer has a 788 lbs tongue weight. Which hitch do I need? 500 or 1000 lb vertical weight? Thanks

Tongue weight and vertical load both refer to the maximum amount of downward force a hitch can safely withstand. This capacity is expressed as tongue weight capacity when speaking of a rear hitch or vertical load limit when discussing a front mounted receiver. Different terms for the same exact thing, in other words.

Because the trailer's tongue weight is 788 lbs, you'll without a doubt want to go with the EcoHitch # EH59FR which has a 1000 lb vertical load capacity, versus the 500 lb capcity of the Curt # C31018 or Draw-Tite # 65049. Another huge benefit? With the EcoHitch model, you won't need to notch the bumper fascia because the EcoHitch model receiver will sit where the license plate holder is, not below the bumper. The hitch actually includes a license plate holder that mounts into the receiver opening, so the hitch won't be visible unless its being used. Pretty slick setup.

I've provided a photo from EcoHitch showing what the # EH59FR hitch looks like once it's installed.
