It is safe to carry two bikes on a trunk rack on the highway. I have carried two bikes from Washington DC to St. Louis and back with the Saris Bones EX 3 Bike Rack - Trunk Mount - Adjustable Arms, part # SA803. It is my go to trunk rack recommendation. It has adjustable arms to get a better fit than a fixed arm rack. It has rubberized fit to protect the finish of your car. It an work with cars that come with spoilers. It can also fold flat for compact storage. Lastly, it is made in the USA.
