Correct Trailer Wiring Harness for 2004 Ford Escape
Updated 04/12/2013 | Published 04/09/2013 >
Question:
I have read previous questions about what is needed for my 04 Ford Escape. As far as I can tell I need C59496 because my car did not come with a hitch. I have recently bought and installed a hidden hitch, but I do not have wiring for it. I was trying to view the video for the above kit for my car, but I dont see a the video for it. Is this the right kit and is there a video for my car? Thanks

You are correct, the # C59496 is the recommended trailer wiring kit for your Escape.
The wiring kit would need to be hardwired into the tail light circuits of your vehicle. The kit comes with some general instructions, but because this is not a vehicle specific item, we do not have instructions that are specific to your vehicle.
You would need to access the rear of your taillight assembles to access the wiring harnesses that connect to them. Beginning with the drivers side, you would use the tester included with the kit and probe the wires that feed the drivers side taillight assembly while the left turn signal is on. The tester has a sharp point on the end of it that can be used to pierce the wire insulation so you can test.
When you find the wire that makes the tester blink along with the turn signal, you have located the left turn signal. Tap the yellow wire on the tail light converter into this circuit. Turn on the running lights, and use the tester on the remaining wires. When you find the correct circuit, tap the brown wire in. Have a helper apply and release the brake pedal, while you probe the wires looking for the wire that goes hot when the brake pedal is pressed, and tap the red wire into it. Ground the white wire and you are finished with the drivers side. The green wire will need to run over to the passenger side tail light assembly. The wire is usually ran behind or under the threshold. Use the tester to locate the right turn signal, and tap the green wire into it.
