Why is Transfer Switch Needed with RV that Uses Shore Power and Generator
Updated 05/07/2021 | Published 05/06/2021 >
Question:
I read somewhere in your question and answer section that if you used generator power you should have a transfer switch between the generator and camper. Why is the generator any different than shore power. My plan is to have my generator in the back of my truck and plug my camper power cord into the generator when needed. my generator would not be installed in my camper but in my truck to be used when needed.

The transfer switch is needed if you plan to use more than one AC power source for your camper. So if you use shore power from a camp site and also want to be able to use a generator you need the transfer switch like the part # 34270278.
With DC power you can run more than one power source to a circuit and there's no issue but with AC power you can't run two power sources to same circuit at same time which is why the transfer switch is needed.
