Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2010 Honda Element With a Rear Spoiler

There are options available that will allow you to carry your Electra Townie bikes on your 2010 Honda Element, but I do not recommend using a trunk mounted bike rack if you have the rear spoiler. To install a trunk mounted bike rack on a Honda Element, the top straps must go over the spoiler and hook to the top edge of the rear hatch. The spoiler on the Element was not designed to support the weight of a bike rack and bikes and could deform or even brake.

Instead, I recommend installing a trailer hitch like the etrailer Class III Trailer Hitch, # e78KR, and using a hitch mounted bike rack. This option will require more of an investment, but this will prevent any possible damage to your vehicle and many other advantages. Using a hitch mounted bike rack will prevent the bike rack or your bikes from contacting your vehicle.

Another factor to consider is the weight of your bikes. Electra Townie bikes can be pretty heavy depending on their size and frame style, so you will want to be sure to check the weight capacity of the bike rack. Most hanging style bike racks have a maximum weight capacity of 35 lbs per bike, but a bike rack like the Thule EasyFold XT, # TH903202, was specifically designed for electric bikes and would be one of your best options. Another option that would save some money is the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE, # HLY84FR. This bike rack does not look as good as the EasyFold XT, but it is a durable bike rack that will certainly get the job done.

The trailer hitch that I referenced has a simple bolt on installation and does not require any drilling. Installing a trailer hitch will also give you the ability to carry a cargo carrier or trailer if the situation ever arose. I have attached the installation instructions for you to check out.

Both the # TH903202 and # HLY84FR come with their own locks to secure them to your hitch so you wouldn't need anything else.
