How thick is the hitch material at the ball mount?

The platform where a ball would install on the # C45503 is 1/2 inch. There can be slight variations due to the powder coat finish, but only slightly. The shank on the # C45503 is a completely solid 1 1/4 inch milled bar, but again, there can be very slight variations due to the powder coat.
