What Can I Tow with 2018 Ford Edge Sport with 2.7L Engine?
Updated 02/17/2021 | Published 02/15/2021 >
Question:
Hi, have you guys any idea why Ford downgrades the tow capacity on 2018 Edge sport? The 2.0 and 3.5 models are rated at 3500lbs but my more powerful 2.7 ecoboost sport is rated at 2000lbs. It doesn’t make sense.

I did a little research and found (curiously) that you are right about the 2.7L/EB does have a lower towing capacity than the 2.0L engine offered. I was not able to determine why. I noticed that you could not get FWD with the 2.7 - but could that matter?
It is no longer just a matter of horsepower and torque. These days an increase in towing capabilities could be due to bigger brakes, engine braking, upgraded transmission, transmission coolers, frame reinforcement, and body construction. It might only be a matter of putting a good hitch on. One website I looked at mentioned that the 2.7L did not have a hitch option like the 2.0 and 3.5 had. Is the Tow Cap low because there is not a hitch installed - or did they not bother installing a hitch because the vehicle had a low Tow Cap?
Next time your down at the Ford dealership getting your oil changed you should ask them what they think.
In the meantime we offer the Curt # C78KR Class-3 receiver hitch with 2" receiver which is custom manufactured for your 2018 Edge Sport. No welding or drilling required. Gloss black finish. If you need a recommendation for a trailer lighting wiring harness or brake controller just let me know.
