Recommended Chain Mid-Link to Repair Safety Chains on 12,000-lbs Trailer

Updated 02/17/2021 | Published 02/14/2021

Question:

Hello I have a trailer rated for 12k the safety chains are 3/8with g43 hooks. They are too long and have damaged some of the links by dragging. Will this clevis link part # 337B2409C be rated for use to relink existing g43hook and chain after removing damaged links? Or must I step up to the titan part with higher weight rating? I dont know if DOT views the total weight rating of combined 2 chains or if each chain and hook must carry 12k plus rating for my 12k trailer. Thanks

To keep it as simple as possible, safety chain requirements state that the breaking strength of EACH chain, not the working load limit (WLL), should be equal to or exceed the gross trailer weight. A 12,000-lbs trailer needs safety chains that each have a break strength of at least 12,000 pounds. For this reason I would go with the Titan Chain Mid Link for Chain w/ 3/8" Thick Links - 8,800 lbs # TCML10 because of the 26k break strength, which will be more than enough for your current trailer and give you a little added strength.

The Buyers Products # 337B2409C have a break strength of around 16k, so they would also work for you; I just prefer the extra added peace of mind with the heavier capacity.
