Availability of Winch To Use With 1/4-Inch Wire Cable

Question:

How many feet of 1/4 steel cable will this winch support?

Expert Reply:

If you need to have a winch that uses a wire cable I do offer the Dutton-Lainson 1,400-Lb Winch, part # DL15303. This winch will accept either a 1/4-inch wire cable or a 2-inch wide strap. It will hold up to 40 feet of 1/4-inch cable or 31 feet of 2-inch wide strap. The part number for the cable would be # DL24104 and for the strap would be # DL24260.

The Shelby 1,400-Lb Winch, part # 5405, you have referenced is designed to be used with a strap only. The hub diameter of the spool is only 3/4-inch. Shelby does not recommend to use a wire cable on that small of a hub diameter. The wire cable will kink and fatigue if it is forced to bend too sharply around a winch hub with a smaller diameter.
