Parts Needed to Add 7 Way Trailer Connector to 2007 Ford F-150 with 4 Way

Updated 12/11/2020 | Published 12/10/2020

Question:

Have a 2007 f150 2x4 w/V6. It has a factory 4 pin trailer connector. I want to upgrade this to a 7 pin connector with a brake controller. I have looked under the truck and do not see a USCAR plug/connector anywhere. It appears that the 4 wires for the factor 4 pin plug just sprout out of the wiring harness. Is a plug and play connector available for this or do I just have to hack and splice into the wiring to add the 7 pin plug and trailer brake controller ?

In order to add a 7 way to your 2007 Ford F-150, you can utilize the existing 4 way connector like the # 40185, but there will be some additional wiring that you'll need to run in order to add it and have a functional brake controller. You will need to run a wires from the 7 way to the battery for a 12v power supply and into the cab of the truck for the brake controller wire. You'll want to use the # ETBC7 which comes with everything you need to install this including breakers and wiring; once you've installed this, you're ready to add a brake controller to your F-150.

For a brake controller I recommend using the Tekonsha P3 # 90195 which will provide you with proportional braking for your trailer that's more responsive than the traditional time delayed controllers. The P3 has an easy to read LCD screen that lets you easily see and adjust your settings, and is one of our most popular controllers. You can use the Tekonsha # 3035-P as a plug and play adapter for the brake controller installation, which limits the cutting and splicing into wiring down to the 7 way installation, so it's a really convenient option.

I've linked some installation videos of these parts on F-150s that you can use as a guide, they won't be the same 2007 year you've got but the process will be the same.
