Question:

I want to install a Prodigy brake controller in a 2005 PT Cruiser turbo convertible. I have the brake controller. It has a 4 pin connector on the back. Do you have a plug in wiring harness or a generic harness w/ info on correct wiring connections? I had some damage to another vehicle when a specialist towing equipment installer made the wrong connections on my 2006 Dodge Sprinter. My main concern is getting the right connection to the cars brake light switch or appropriate alternative connection.

The first thing you are going to want to do is consult the vehicle owners manual to determine if the vehicle is rated for towing. I own a 2003 PT Cruiser Turbo and from what I found on the 2003 and 2005s is that they have a 1,000 pound towing capacity. Confirm this with the owners manual.

To install a brake controller you will need a few items starting with the controller itself which it sounds like you already have. Next you will need to add a 7-Way trailer connector. To do this you will need to first install a 4-Way flat wiring harness # C55532 if the vehicle does not already have one. The wiring harness you referenced, # 42535, does not fit the PT Cruiser.

Next you will need # ETBC7 to add the 7-Way and provide the wiring to install the brake controller. In order to find the correct wire on the brake switch you will need to use a circuit tester (included with ETBC7) to test the wires on the brake switch. You will need the one that only shows power when the brake pedal is pressed. If the wire also shows power with the headlights or turn signals on it is not the correct wire.

We have not installed a brake controller on a PT Cruiser so testing the wires is essential. I have included some links that will help explain this hardwire installation.
