looking at a hitch for 2008 matrix xr. Am wondering what heat shield modification involves. thanks

On some models of the Matrix, the muffler heat shield is installed in such a way that it would be sandwiched in between the hitch and the underside of the vehicle. If this is the case, the heat shield would either need to be trimmed away or removed so that the mounting flanges of the # C12013 hitch are in direct contact with the underside of the frame rail as shown in the provided diagram.
If you do have to remove the heat shield, don't worry. The hitch is much more substantial than then thin metal that the heat shield is constructed of, so once in place the hitch will offer more heat protection than the shield ever did.
