Recommended Hitch and 2 Bike Rack for 2010 Acura MDX

Updated 10/30/2012 | Published 10/28/2012

Question:

We have a 2010 Acura RDX and would like to install a hitch and two-bike rack. The dealer cost for hitch installation seems high. Which hitch and bike rack do you recommend? What features should we look for in each? We are only occasional bike riders but might use the hitch for other purposes.

Beginning with the hitch, I would recommend the Draw-Tite Class III Receiver, part # 75784. The installation of this particular hitch is a pretty simple process. You can look over the install instructions I have linked to in order to determine if it is something you would feel comfortable tackling yourself.

Choosing a Class III over the Class II which uses the smaller receiver opening will provide you with more flexibility in choosing hitch mounted accessories such as the bike rack you mentioned or a cargo carrier. Curt makes a great hitch, but the Draw-Tite model would be better concealed behind the rear bumper of your RDX.

Even though you will not be using the bike rack frequently, there are some bike rack features like anti-sway cradles and rubber hold-down straps that I feel are essential.

A good moderately-priced rack would be the Swagman Titan, part # S63400. In addition to the anti-sway cradles and sturdy rubber straps to hold the bikes to the rack, the Titan also provides an integrated cable lock that will help deter theft. Adding an optional hitch lock, part # S64029 is also recommended.

The Thule Helium Aero, part # TH9042PRO is a high quality option. The Helium Aero features an integrated hitch and cable lock, as well as extremely lightweight and durable aluminum construction. The rack only weighs 19 lbs, which makes it very easy to install and remove.

To carry womens bikes or bikes with sharply angled top tubes or step-through frames, using a frame adapter like part # 64005 is recommended. The adapter spans the distance between the seat post and the handle bar gooseneck, and provides a level attachment point to the bike rack so the bike has greater ground clearance and is not carried at an angle.

I have linked you to the products I recommended, and also to an install video for the hitch and some product demonstration videos that you might find helpful.
