The Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains like part # PW1038 are designed to be used on the front or the rear of the vehicle depending on what type of drive line it has.
The chains should be placed on the drive axle of the vehicle if using just one set and on both axles if using two. For front wheel drive vehicles you want to place the chains on the front axle. For rear wheel drive vehicles you want them on the rear.
Since your vehicle is all wheel drive check the owner's manual if just using one set to see which is the primary drive axle. In the case of your 2017 Subaru Forester I believe that your front axle is the primary but again always good to check the manual.
