How to Determine the Correct Replacement Hubs for a 3500 lb Torsion Axle Trailer Without Brakes

Updated 09/26/2012 | Published 09/24/2012

Question:

Ive attached a picture of my boat trailer. As you can see, my hub is in bad shape. I took the brakes off, so I want to replace with a non-brake hub. Is this all that I need to replace, or is there a spindle that needs replacing also? Its a 3500lb torsion axle. And do you have these parts in stock?

Many states now require trailers to have brakes. Before selecting different hubs for your trailer, I would recommend checking with your local laws and regulations to verify whether you need brakes or not.

If you find that you do not need brakes, then you could simply replace your hub with an idler hub. When choosing a replacement hub it is important to keep a few things in mind. The easiest factors to consider are the bolt pattern of the hub, your wheel size and your axle capacity. I have attached a help article that explains how to determine the bolt pattern of your hub or wheel.

Most of our hubs include the bearings, races and seal, so we would need to know the part numbers of your bearings. Once you pull off your original hubs you should be able to find a part number stamped on each bearing. If you can send me the information about your hub and your bearing part numbers, then I can recommend the correct replacement hub for you.

You can also check out all of the hubs that we have to offer by following the link that I have provided.

If you cannot find the part numbers on your bearings, then you can take a few measurements of your spindle using a precise measuring tool such as a dial caliper to find the inner diameters of the bearings and seal. It is important that you get an exact measurement because bearing can have diameters that are very similar and it is important that we know the correct measurement to ensure we choose the correct parts. I have attached a photo showing what measurements to take for your bearings and seal.

If you pull off your hubs and find that your spindles have to be replaced, then I would recommend replacing your trailer axle. Spindles are welded into the axle and removing them could compromise the integrity of the axle. You may be able to find a qualified professional near you that can remove a spindle and install a new one, but more often than not, the axle is replaced if the spindle is bad.
