Question:
How much tolerance is allowable for safe towing if a ball mount and ball will not exactly match height of trailer coupler? i.e., 1/2, 1 I am having trouble finding a mount that is not either too high or too low. I will appreciate any help you can offer.

The trick here is to get as close as possible. If you are talking about less than 2 inches or so, there is nothing to worry about. Having the trailer tongue a bit too high is preferable to it being too low.
You may be a good candidate for an adjustable ball mount. I would recommend the Convert-A-Ball Adjustable Ball Mount, part # TK5007 which adjusts between a 10 inch drop to a 9 inch rise.
I am including a link to a demonstration video showing the features of the # TK5007 ballmount, as well as a link to our adjustable ball mount category so you can see the other mounts we have available.
