Replacement Trailer Jack for Viking Legend Pop-Up Camper

Updated 05/29/2025 | Published 05/20/2020

Question:

I have a 2004 Viking Legend 2485ST pop up camper, and my top-wind trailer jack with 8 wheel needs to be replaced. The jack uses a clamp to hold the 48mm 1.9in OD tube, and it must be unclamped and retracted upward to get the wheel out of the way for travel. I think my only option is to replace it with a similar style, since the clamp is welded to the side of the trailer see pics. My GVWR is 3,280lbs, so Im thinking tongue weight max is around 500lbs, but Im not sure? The current model number on the Alko looks to be 1222434 stamped on wheel. I saw on another expert response one of your guys mentioned that is similar to etrailer product #BD1701480317, but that has an OD tube of 2.25 - Im not sure if the clamp will open up quite that much, since it must be tightened very securely in order to support the tongue weight. Im open to replacing the entire thing with an alternative, but Im not sure what options I have.

What you've got there looks like some type of proprietary mount that we don't offer. We do however have jacks that would work.

I'd recommend having the mount removed and using a weld-on jack like the Fulton # FXP100W0301 and the # P9012-00 bracket. This is a swivel jack, so when the pop-up is hitched to the tow vehicle, pull the pin and swing up the jack so it stores parallel to the trailer frame. This prevents the caster from hitting anything while towing and getting damaged, which from your photo looks like what happened. The jack has a 1200 lb capacity which is more than you'd ever need but overkill is the way to go with trailer jacks. The jack won't need to work as hard to operate (nor will you) which will extend the life of the jack.

Does the inner tube rotate inside the outer tube on this jack? I need one that rotates inside the outer tube with a top wind crank

What you're looking for is something like the Fulton Bolt-Thru Swivel Marine Jack # FXP15.

@JonG FXP15 won’t work for my application. It has to have a top wind like this has. https://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Jack/Bulldog/BD1701480317.html

@ScottB I apologize for missing that part. In that case if you want a bolt-on installation go with the etrailer jack # TJBB-2001-B and 6" Caster # JC-101. The caster reduces the weight rating of the jack down to 1,200 lbs but that is pretty typical for trailer jacks. The inner tube won't rotate inside the outer tube, but the caster is on a swivel so the wheel will spin to make it easier to maneuver your trailer.

This picture of this jack is just like mine, I need a caster with the go through pin with carter key. Are these still able to purchase?

@RichardG Unfortunately, it's really hard to say without knowing the brand and model of your jack. The photo shown didn't give much help in identifying it...

@RichardG The original fitment is an AL-KO Kober jockey wheel. I think AL-KO makes a great looking jack BTW, it’s top-wind, has a steel wheel, good bearings with a solid rubber tire. The static weight rating is 150 Kg (330 lbs) while the dynamic weight (moving the hitch while jacked up) is rated at a mere 90 KG (198 lbs). The clamp is more than sturdy enough but it seems the crappy brackets on the wheel fold up like a house of cards, especially when trying to roll the camper around with a loaded storage compartment, full propane tank and a battery. Judging by the number of empty AL-KO jack clamps out there, it’s probably safe to say they’re a little too “light-duty”. AL-KO jacks are a common European fitment and appear to be popular in Australia as well. They can be ordered online but will be expensive compared to common American jacks, like Mike L recommends. My pop-up is another example that came with an empty AL-KO clamp and after market bolt-on jack. It also came with a lame safety chain set-up and I ended up grinding the welds to remove the AL-KO clamp to free up a place for my new chain set-up.
