I see how to remove the mirror, but the cord seems to slide under the door panel. will i have to remove the door panel to plug in the replacement mirror?

The K-Source Replacement Side Mirror part # KS70187T for passenger side or part # KS70188T for driver side which are a fit for a 2018 Toyota Highlander should be able to be installed by just removing the cover inside. That said, if the plug is tucked down behind the panel you may need to peel this back or possibly remove this altogether. I don't have an exact write-up for this but it should be pretty straightforward once you get started.
