How To Use 17.5" Wheels On a 7,000 Lb Trailer Axle

Updated 09/30/2025 | Published 04/28/2020

Question:

I want to put 17.5 tires and rims on my trailer. I have dexter 7000# axles, 8 on 6 1/2, but with 1/2 studs. Do you have a rim for 1/2 studs or what do I need to do. thanks,

In order to use 17.5" diameter trailer wheels you'll need to upgrade to 9/16" lug studs. There are no other options as all wheels this size use this size or larger since they are designed for more weight. In order to do this you'll need the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly part # AKHD-865-7-1-K for standard or part # AKHD-865-7-1-EZ-K for EZ-Lube. Then, you can use a 17.5" diameter trailer wheel like the Aluminum Lynx Trailer Wheel part # 274-000006.

I have attached a full list of wheel options below.

i checking wheel stud sizing and im measuring 9 /16th exactly, 2012 redwood 36RE gvw 13300 empty any way,i took a 1/2inch 24 tap and it just slides into lugnut cap easily does not engage the threads at all,way small i guessing that makes it a 9/16th stud it is a exact diameter across a tape measure also my question with your replacement tire rim comber how much stud lenght do i need? lippert says they r 2.31 overall in lenght Is there a standard measurement in lenght for this stud from drum face? i want to upgrade from 16" tires to 17.5 inch tires it has oversize Hancook 750/6 x16" 14ply tires on it and the factory redwood rims, tires which r dryrotted replacement upgrades when i purchased it,

@KarlB There is not a standard wheel stud length on those hubs, they vary depending on your tire and wheel. Most of ours for a 7k axle 8 lug hub are going to be 1 5/8ths long, but can be longer. What tire and wheel combo were you looking at on our site? I can double check and see what length you would need for that specific tire and wheel combo.

So what lug nuts would I need to use for the 17.5 steel wheels? Would I use a cone style lug nut or the flat style with the washer? if using the cone style would I need to use a tension ring? My trailer already has the 9/16 studs with 7/8 cone lug nuts.

@MattY It would depend on the wheel you go with but you'd want 9/16 inch lug nuts like the part # DE73KR with a 17.5 inch trailer wheel like the part # TA84XR. Which wheel are you referring to?
