Is It Safe to Switch Trailer Hitch Ball Size to Fit Damaged Coupler

i have a very heavy duty pull behind 14 ft trailer that has the Y tongue on it. Before i bought the trailer the right side of the tongue got hit. the piece that slides on the inside of the ball hitch is in a bind and is almost impossible to lock the ball on the truck to the hitch without prying back on the connector on the underneath side of the hitch. trailer has a 2 inch tongue and I was wondering if it would be safe to change the ball on my truck to 1-7/8 to make connecting and disconnecting the trailer to my truck an easier process

I'm sorry to hear about the damage that occurred to your trailer, but it is not safe to change out the size of the hitch ball to accommodate a damaged coupler, which, from your description, is what it sounds like you have. That is especially true considering you say you have a "very heavy duty" trailer, because smaller 1-7/8" hitch balls have lesser, under-5k capacities.
The best option is going to be to replace your damaged coupler with a new one that will allow you to properly - and safely - attach your 2" trailer hitch ball. You said you have a "Y-tongue" which is also called an A-frame.
For an A-frame coupler I recommend the Demco A-Frame Trailer Coupler with Jack Hole - eZ-Latch - Black - 2" Ball - Bolt On - 10K # DM14793-81.
For an A-frame but with a straight tongue and 3" channel I recommend the Buyers Products Straight Tongue Trailer Coupler - Auto Latch - 2" Ball - Bolt On - 10K # 3370091560.
