The Curt trailer hitch # C11700 has a capacity of 2,000 pounds. It is given this rating based on its connection points on the vehicle and testing done by the manufacturer. The connection points on the vehicle for this hitch can handle the 1,300 pounds.

What I recommend to give you piece of mind is to go with a more stout trailer hitch for your 2004 Honda Element. The Class III hitch, # e78KR, bolts to the frame in 4 places and to the tow loop. The hitch has a higher capacity at 3,500 pounds but will be limited to the towing capacity of the vehicle as stated in the owner's manual. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you.

If you decide to go with the Class III trailer hitch, I recommend the etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts, 2 balls, a hitch pin and clip, and a carrying bag. For trailer wiring, use # 118336. I have included some links covering the installation of the wiring as well. The video is on a similar vehicle and installation will be similar on your Element.
