Does the controller have to be used in a horizontal position or will it work at any angle?

The Curt Echo Mobile Brake Controller # C51180 that you referenced can work in all angles as we have tested for this and it always works great regardless of 7-way orientation on the vehicle. The inertia sensor does not require the controller to face a specific direction like most proportional controllers that mount to the vehicle dash do.
