Question:
Good Afternoon, Whats the easiest way to get a brake controller on my 2020 Subaru Outback Wagon? I don't have a 7-way at this time. I am leading towards the Curt Echo but is very reliable?? I have never used anything that looks like this newfangled contraption before. I am comfortable using my smart phone thanks to my granddaughter. It is an Iphone IOS 13. Is it compatible? Will the trailer brakes stop working when I use my phone like make a phone call or what? What if I lose service? What if I don't have WIFI where I am? I am nervous..I have a 4-way already.

Good Afternoon Lucas, you are on the right track for the easiest way to install a brake controller on your 2020 Subaru Outback Wagon. The Curt Echo brake controller part # C51180 is unlike any other brake controller on the market at this time (December 2019) you are correct about that. However, it is very reliable and we have had a lot of great reviews from our customers. Your smart phone is compatible because the Curt Echo works with Apple IOS 8.0 or newer and Android 4.4 operating system or newer.
The Curt Echo utilizes Blue Tooth technology to operate so the trailer brakes will still work even if your phone receives a phone call or you use it for another app. The only thing you will not be able to do is use a Blue Tooth accessory like a headset or your vehicle's media system when the Curt Echo is paired to the Blue Tooth. Since it uses Blue Tooth technology is does not require WIFI or cell phone service to operate. The only time you will need WIFI is when you are setting up the Curt Echo app on your phone.
The Curt Echo plugs in line with a 7-Way on your Outback Wagon, for that you will need the kit part # ETBC7L. Since the Echo only requires 12V power to operate because of it's internal sensor the only wires from the 7-Way plug in this kit you will need to extend to the front of the vehicle is the black 12V wire via the included circuit breaker. You will also need a solid ground connection with the Outback's frame with the white wire. The existing 4-Way will plug into the pigtail that is coming off of the plug. I have attached videos for your reference.
