How to Remove Lower Trim Panel for Trailer Hitch Receiver Installation on 2019 Mazda CX-9

Published 11/21/2019

Question:

I see that it may be needed to get rid of the trim panel to install a trailer hitch receiver on my 2019 Mazda CX-9? Is that needed and is that something that's pretty hard to do with special tools or whatever?

You are right that there is a small trim panel underneath your 2019 Mazda CX-9 that does need to be removed when installing either the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76020 or Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13284. Doing this is not difficult at all and only requires a flat head screwdriver and 10mm socket.

All that is required is popping off the two plastic fasteners using the flat head screwdriver and then using the 10mm socket to twist off a couple of hex nuts; the trim panel does not get re-installed. I have added links to video installs of both the Draw-Tite and Curt hitches on a 2019 Mazda CX-5 for you to check out so you can see exactly what you'll need to do.

If you are looking to tow with this hitch and need a wiring harness I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118278, which you can mount to the Draw-Tite hitch with Mounting Bracket # 18144. I've added a link to a video install of this harness for you on a 2019 Mazda CX-5 as well.
