In order to tow a 5x8 U-Haul cargo trailer with your 2018 Mazda CX-9 you will need a trailer hitch, a 4-Way wiring harness, and a ball mount/hitch ball combo.

There are two Class III 2 inch trailer hitch receivers available for your CX-9, the Curt # C13284 and the Draw-Tite # 76020. Both feature pretty similar designs and will use the same existing holes in the vehicle's frame but I recommend going with the Curt # C13284 because it offers a slightly more recessed (hidden) receiver and a bit more ground clearance.

I have attached an installation video on your 2018 Mazda CX-9 that you can use for reference.

Then for a 4-Way harness I recommend the Tekonsha T-One # 118278 as long as you have the factory tow package. This custom harness will plug right into the built-in port behind the passenger side trim panel. I have attached an installation video on this harness that you can check out as well. If you do not have the factory tow package you will need to go with a universal hardwire harness, for which I recommend the # C59496.

Either option will provide you with a 4-Way connector that will connect with the 4-Way already installed on the U-Haul trailer to power its basic signal lights.

Lastly for a ball mount the Curt # C45030 should work great. It features either a 1 inch rise or a 2-1/4 inch drop and can be used with a 2 inch ball like # 63845.

I have attached a couple great articles on trailer towing that you might also find helpful.
