Solution for Lowering Boat Trailer and Storing Inside Garage During Winter

Updated 10/22/2019 | Published 10/21/2019

Question:

I have a 22 foot sailboat that is a few inches higher than the garage that Id like to store it on over the winter. I could try to remove some air from the tires but these are in terrible shape and need to be replaced. Is there a dolly that could hold up the axle while I remove the tires and then be lowered and hold the boat for the winter? The boat is roughly 3000 lbs. I am open to other ideas as well. Thanks!

The best option we have available for your application is a set of jack stands like the excellent 2-Ton # PTW41021. You can place these on each side of the axle to support the trailer, although I recommend using 4 total (each set includes 2 jacks) for even weight distribution.

You could then remove the tires and adjust the jacks accordingly to lower the trailer. They have a minimum height of 10-3/4" and a maximum lift height of 16-3/4".

You would still use your existing tongue jack to support the front of the trailer during storage as well. Keep in mind that if the trailer with boat is a few inches taller than the garage, you may still need to lower the air pressure of the tires just so you can first pull the trailer into the garage before removing them.

I have attached a short video review that you can check out as well.
