Troubleshooting Locking Kodiak Calipers

Updated 10/08/2019 | Published 10/07/2019

Question:

I just ordered a set ok Kodiak disc brakes for my 8k axels, and the hydrastar pump and line kit. After install, I bled the brakes in a standard sequence, and all seemed correct, but all 4 calipers remained locked up when I put wheels on and put the trailer on the ground. I cracked all 4 bleeders to relieve pressure, and even the line off the pump, so I know it’s not residual pressure. But all 4 are locked up and show no sign of freeing up? Ever heard of this problem? I use this trailer daily, so it’s crucial to have it back on the road. Doesn’t help that Kodiak’s phone lines are down Thank you in advance

A locked up caliper, such as the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR858A is often the result of either the piston or the flex hose not allowing brake fluid to move in and out of the piston. You can test the piston to make sure it retracts properly and does not drag on the pads by collapsing both pistons with a piston caliper compressor after cracking the bleeder valve open.

If while you're doing this you're getting a lot of resistance when the pistons are being pushed back in, that could be because there's a clog in the hose. If the piston doesn't close you know the line is the clogged. If it does close, you could have an issue with your brake line further up the line from the flex hose.

Beyond this troubleshooting if you still haven't been able to identify the cause or replace the necessary parts to resolve, a qualified mechanic would be your next step.
